Chapter Four

Kieran If I'd wondered why Sam had taken one look at the Indian cruising bike I was straddling before we took off and smirked, I wasn't anymore. Snaking along the edges of Lake Michigan where the rolling hills were rocky and peppered with lakes and corn fields, I was already feeling as if at any minute I was going to get picked up by the wind and carried off into the foothills of the Cumberland Plateau of Eastern Kentucky.

Sam had stayed out in front of me the entire time on his Honda Gold Wing bike… a simple touring machine, while I rode my fancy Harley lookalike, wondering where in the hell the next gas station was.

It was cold, and the leather jacket and pants I'd donned just barely kept me from being a frozen icicle, not to mention the scarf I wore around my mouth was now coated with bugs and frosted with a good coating of ice. I wondered if, in this lousy weather, Skittle would get skittled.

I was tired already. There are a couple of airfields between here and Columbus. We'd found Strietelmeier Flying Field and Cherry Hill Airport, and the personnel there reported exactly what they'd told the local PD when they'd caught a guy trying to steal a plane.

I was relieved when they mentioned they'd seen a girl we identified as Harley and that she was alive. For how much longer, we didn't know. I could hardly stand the thought of that. I lived with tragedy being a cop in BC, but this was just too close to home.

Our companion with the weird name called the local cops to inquire if there had been any car thefts reported within the last few hours. We got a positive and a make on the car—a '94 Chevy. We also knew exactly where the bugger was four-and-a-half hours ago. He was seventy-two miles outside the now practically deserted town of Beanblossom.

"Why do you think they call it that?" Sam asked, before we took the road again. We were waiting for Skittle who told us unequivocally that he had a weak bladder and the riding was not doing it any good.

I smirked at him. "Beans?" "Okay," he grunted, "but what about the blossom part?"

"Ah"—I shrugged—"Sam, for shit's sakes, don't you know beans grow on blossoms?"

He just looked at me.

"I thought it was funny."

"Well, I guess you're the only one, Kieran."

We laughed. I didn't know Sam that well. He'd been the last to join our little circle but I liked him. I liked his dry humor and, aside from Jube, there was no one besides Sam I would have wanted out here with me right now.

Our companion joined us at that moment. He cocked his head, waiting until the laughter stopped. "What's the joke? You're not making fun of my bladder problem, are you?"

"I wasn't." Sam smirked. Then he pointed at me and said serious as all hell, "But he was. I told him to stop. Canadians have a weird sense of humor.
